Chocolate Ganache Tart

Love is sweet. Love is salty. Love is this Chocolate Ganache Tart. If there is one thing that I must have every Valentine’s Day, it’s got to be a chocolate dessert. And when I say chocolate dessert, I mean pure chocolate. No chocolate covered fruit or anything like that– chocolate must be the star! This year, I would have to say that I hit it out of the park with this sinfully rich Chocolate Ganache Tart! This tart is so decadent (thanks to two kinds of chocolate and some whipping cream) that you only need to eat a small slice to get that chocolate fix. This is great since this tart can be shared amongst a large group of people, or enjoyed over the course of a few days by you and your loved one! 😉 Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate There are two basic elements to this Chocolate Ganache Tart. First is the chocolate tart base that gets its chocolate flavour from unsweetened cocoa powder. The second (and arguably the most impressive) is the …

Homemade Hot Chocolate

If you’re fed up with all snow and the cold weather we have been having lately, a cup of Homemade Hot Chocolate is just what you need. Rather than buying a pre-made hot chocolate mix that is full of preservatives and unnecessary ingredients, I encourage you to make your own. Not only is it super easy, you likely have all the ingredients in your pantry! Pantry Staples & Fancy Additions Simply combine some unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated white sugar, vanilla extract and salt in a pot of warm milk and you will have a rich and creamy hot chocolate in under 10 minutes! You can use whatever milk you like, but my favourite is 2% milk from our local BC dairy farmers! While this is a basic recipe, you can also go all out and add whatever toppings you like. I like to keep it pretty simple with whipped cream and maybe a sprinkle of chocolate chips. But if you want to take it up a notch you can add chocolate shavings, a cinnamon stick, …

Homemade Chocolate Turtles

OK, so this may not be a cookie recipe, but I just had to include these tasty sweets in my #12DaysOfChristmas series! You may know these caramely, choclatey and crunchy candies as Sweet Georgia Browns or Pecan Clusters, but I have always recognized these candies as Turtles. You often see these candies come out around the holiday season. They come packaged in their tall, iconic orange and white striped box. On the front of the box is their little mascot– a turtle dressed to the nines in a tuxedo, top hat, cane and monocle. Super fancy, right? While these candies are easy to buy (and taste delicious) I have come up with a homemade version for all the adventurous cooks out there in my recipe for Homemade Chocolate Turtles! I have to warn you, this is not an easy recipe to make whenever you feel like it. Don’t decide to make these on a whim on a weeknight or if you have some place to be in the next 2-3 hours. This requires some planning, concentration, and …

Chocolate Rudolph Cookies

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen. Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen. But do you recall, the most famous reindeer of all? It is the second day of the #12DaysOfChristmas series and do I ever have the perfect holiday cookie for you! These chocolate and cherry cookies are named after Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, the true star and hero of Christmas. In my household, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without these Chocolate Rudolph Cookies. My mom got this recipe from a Christmas Cookie magazine in the 90’s and she has been making them ever since. These fudgy chocolate cookies have a chewy, brownie-like base and are adorned with bright Maraschino cherries (to look like Rudolph’s nose). The richness of the cocoa combined with the sweetness of the Maraschino cherry is an unexpected flavor combination for the holiday season, but it works so well! Whether you make them for your friends and family, or leave them out for Santa, these cookies are sure to go down in history! 😉 To get the full …

Chocolate-Hazelnut Mousse

This year, I am celebrating Valentine’s Day with my favourite sweet treat: Nutella. Growing up in an Italian family, Nutella was definitely one of my most favourite treats as a kid. I would have it on about anything: on ice cream, straight out of the jar with a spoon (the best way), with cookies, but mainly spread across warm toast with some fresh sliced strawberries. Yum! I thought that this Valentine’s day would be a perfect way to bring my childhood favourite treat back into my life, but with an adult twist in my recipe for Chocolate-Hazelnut Mousse. While making homemade mousse may seem daunting and complex, there are just a few ingredients involved in this recipe and it is relatively easy if you plan ahead (and maybe if you have an electric mixer). Plus, it turns out wonderfully if you use the freshest and best available ingredients that you can find—which is particularly important in this recipe. But once everything is combined and is light and fluffy, you will have a lush, decadent, chocolatey …

Gluten-Free Chocolate-Peppermint Crinkle Cookies

With Christmas just around the corner, I thought I would share some tasty Christmas cookie recipes with you all. For me, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without making tons of cookies. I love to make a variety of cookies, some traditional shortbread cookies, jam cookies, chocolate cookies and some fun cookies that I used to make as a kid with my mom. It really brings back such nice memories 🙂 For this Christmas, I thought I would do a spin on a traditional Chocolate Crinkle Cookie by adding one of my favourite winter flavours: peppermint! I can’t seem to get enough peppermint these days. I’ve run through three boxes of peppermint tea so far and I love adding a splash of peppermint extract to my hot chocolate. It’s so refreshing and really wakes up your senses! You can find peppermint extract at any grocery store these days, but try to find an organic one. I find the organic peppermint extracts are much more flavourful and have that less processed taste compared to regular peppermint extract. This …

Power Up! Choco-Coconut Power Balls

With this cold, dreary March we have been having so far, I am in desperate need of a pick me up. With the weather we have been having recently (it snowed AGAIN on Sunday) I have been so sluggish and unmotivated to do anything. At this point, all of the coffee, puppies, and flowers, in the world couldn’t help me at this point.  Ok… maybe the puppies would help. But, instead of continuing to mope this past weekend, I took matters into my own hands to create a few little pieces of happiness for myself. As it so happens, these little pieces of happiness are delicious and are also good for you. My Choco-Coconut Power Balls are a tasty, healthy, and filling snack to have on hand when you need a little bit of extra energy. These Power Balls are packed with sweet dates, creamy nut butter, crunchy oats, tender coconut, and rich cocoa powder that when combined, really fills you up. While I am excited about the fact that these Choco-Coconut Power Balls are …
