The Coastal Grandmother trend may have gone viral on TikTok, but its roots run much deeper than social media. The trend is inspired by Nancy Meyers, Martha Stewart, and Ina Garten, three iconic women who have embodied this effortless and fabulous lifestyle for decades through comforting recipes, timeless style, and welcoming homes and interiors. While the aesthetic is often associated with East Coast charm, there’s a distinctly West Coast version that’s just as inspiring…and a little more laid-back.

On the West Coast, this aesthetic is shaped by a different kind of coastal living that is inspired by the beautiful nature and scenery, where mountains, forests, and the ocean meet. This West Coastal Grandmother lifestyle is also closely tied to a strong sense of community, a commitment to supporting local farms and makers, and embracing a slower, more intentional and laid-back lifestyle, while still enjoying all aspects of seasonal living.

In the Summer Edition of Season & Serve Digital Magazine, I explore what the Coastal Grandmother lifestyle looks like here in British Columbia. But for now, here’s a quick peek: five West Coast-inspired ways to embrace this elegant, seasonal lifestyle no matter the season.

5 Easy Ways to Embrace a West Coastal Grandmother Year-Round

1. Cook with Local and Seasonal Ingredients

The West Coast offers incredible local ingredients to enjoy throughout the year. Incorporate local and seasonal ingredients into your weekly meals to enjoy ingredients while they are at their peak. I like to eat lost of fresh greens and peas in summer, tomatoes and orchard fruits in summer, salmon and mushrooms in the fall, and squash and seafood in the winter. Shopping at farmers markets, nearby farm stands, or independent grocers helps support local producers and adds variety to your cooking.

2. Choose Climate-Appropriate Wardrobe Staples

Living on the West Coast means dressing for changing conditions throughout the year. In warmer months, opt for breathable fabrics like linen and cotton, along with sun protection and layers for cooler evenings. In fall and winter, focus on waterproof outerwear, durable boots, warm scarves, and cozy knits that can handle damp, chilly weather. Versatile, quality basics make it easy to stay comfortable and polished year-round.

3. Refresh Your Home with Natural Touches

Let your home reflect the season by making small, intentional changes throughout the year. In spring and summer, lighten things up with airy fabrics, fresh-cut flowers, and lots of natural light. In fall and winter, swap in cozy textures like wool or flannel, display seasonal branches or evergreens, and layer in warm lighting with candles or lamps. Natural materials like wood, ceramic, linen, and glass help keep your space feeling grounded, timeless, and connected to the outdoors.

4. Maintain Simple Hosting Habits

Hosting doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions. Whether it’s a summer barbecue, a cozy fall soup night, or a winter gathering with mulled wine, keep things easy and welcoming. Use seasonal ingredients, set a relaxed table, and focus on creating a warm atmosphere. West Coast entertaining tends to be low-key and unfussy…what matters most is good food and good company.

5. Support Local and Participate in Community Life

Being a West Coastal Grandmother means staying connected to the people and places around you. Support local businesses year-round, whether that’s visiting a farmers market, shopping at neighbourhood boutiques, or dining at seasonal restaurants. Take part in community activities like harvest festivals, craft fairs, beach cleanups, or garden tours. These simple actions strengthen community ties and help you live more intentionally throughout the year.
