What is a Tartine?

A tartine is a French open-faced sandwich consisting of a slice of bread topped with a variety of ingredients. The bread used is typically a sturdy type like a French loaf, country loaf, or sourdough.

There are tons of variations on tartines as they can be made savory or sweet. This versatility allows you to enjoy your favourite seasonal ingredients on toast for any meal of the day: breakfast, lunch, snack, or dinner. Overall, they are appreciated for their simplicity, the quality of their ingredients, and their visually appealing presentation.

An Easy No-Cook Summer Recipe

When it’s warm outside and the last thing that you want to do is cook, this Strawberry, Basil and Burrata Tartine is the perfect recipe to enjoy. The only “cooking” that is involved is toasting bread in the toaster, which is so simple and releases a very small amount of heat.

The rest of the meal is just simple slicing and assembly. Here is the order in which I assemble the tartine so that it holds up as you eat it:

  • Toast: toasted French loaf forms the base of the tartine. Make sure to cut the bread at least 2-centimetres thick
  • Burrata: divide the burrata into halves (or quarters if you are using a large ball) and place the creamy side up. Spread the creamy centre of the burrata across the toast to all edges
  • Strawberries: top the burrata with sliced strawberries. Arrange them so they slightly overlap.
  • Basil: top the strawberries with julienned basil. Make sure to sprinkle the basil evenly over all the strawberries.
  • Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar: a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar adds tang and richness to the tartine. The balsamic vinegar will also bring out all the flavour in the strawberries.
  • Pistachios: top everything off with a sprinkling of pistachios. I like to roughly chop them so they settle in between the strawberries and basil so they do not fall off.

  1. I wish I did this instead of making strawberry pie. This looks so much more interesting.
