How to Make Shrunken Apple Heads
For me, decorating for Halloween doesn’t just stop at a few carved pumpkins or a creepy tablescape; I even decorate my punch bowl. These shrunken apple heads are what make this Halloween punch extra special, and they are easier to make than you might think:
- Start by peeling, halving, and coring your apples
- Use a melon baller or paring knife to carve spooky faces into each half
- Dip the carved heads into lemon water to help prevent the apples from browning
- Bake in a low-temperature oven to let them shrink and develop their signature creepy appearance
- Once baked and cooled, freeze the apple heads until you are ready to add them to your punch bowl
You can really get creative with your carvings or just go simple and classic. You don’t have to worry about making them perfect as exaggerated features, crooked smiles, and uneven eyes only add to their spooky charm!
Bonus tip: Freezing the shrunken apple heads before adding them to your punch will keep your punch chilled without watering down the flavour like regular ice can. You can also make these shrunken apple heads a few days in advance and freeze them until you are ready to serve your punch at your party, making this a great make-ahead component of this recipe.

Why This Is the Perfect Halloween Party Punch and Recommended Assembly
The best punch recipes are festive, delicious, and easy to prepare just before your event begins. Plus, a large batch-style drink like this ensures that you can enjoy your party and not play bartender all night long!
This Shrunken Head Apple Cider Punch features seasonal fall ingredients, including apple cider and cranberry juice, for a refreshing combination of sweet and tart flavours. Ginger beer adds a bit of effervescence, while cinnamon sticks bring a subtle hint of warming spices without adding additional sweetness. Best of all, this recipe makes a generous batch, so there is plenty to share with a crowd.
I recommend assembling the punch about 10 minutes before your party officially starts. Pour the chilled apple cider and cranberry juice into the punch bowl and add the cinnamon sticks. These can sit at room temperature for a bit. Then as your guests arrive, add the ginger beer to ensure that your punch is bubbly and fizzy, along with the frozen apple heads. You may wish to top up the punch with ginger beer throughout the evening to keep the bubbles going.
If you are serving adults, you can also opt to add some alcohol to the punch. I recommend just topping off each glass of punch with a half ounce of whisky or rum. This way you can keep the main bowl of punch alcohol-free for guests who may wish to not drink, and those who would like to have a bit of alcohol can indulge on their own!

Shrunken Head Apple Cider Punch
Ingredients
For the Shrunken Apple Heads:
- 3 large apples peeled, halved and cored
- 2 cups water
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice
For the Apple Cider Punch:
- 4 litres apple cider chilled
- 800 millilitres ginger beer chilled
- 500 millilitres cranberry juice unsweetened, chilled
- 3 to 6 cinnamon sticks whole
- Ice for serving
- 1 ounce spiced whiskey or rum (if desired)
Instructions
To make the shrunken apple heads:
- Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.
- Prepare the apples for carving by peeling, halving, and coring all of the apples.
- Mix the water and lemon juice in a small bowl and dunk each of the apple halves into the water. This will prevent them from browning.
- Use a melon baller or paring knife to carefully carve faces into each of the apple halves. Get creative and as elaborate as you want! Once the apple half is carved, dunk it in the lemon water again and place on the baking tray. Repeat for the rest of the apple halves.
- Once all the apples are carved, bake in the centre of the oven for 3 to 3 ½ hours. The total baking time will depend on the size of your apples, so check them at 3 hours. They will be slightly browned, shrunken, and dry on the outside but the centre will still be moist.
- Remove from the oven and let cool completely, then transfer to a plastic bag and place in the freezer to freeze completely.
To make the apple cider punch:
- Add all of the punch ingredients to a large punch bowl (or large serving bowl). Add the frozen shrunken apple heads to the punch and stir to combine.
- To serve, place some ice in a glass and spoon over the punch. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- Carve and bake the shrunken apple heads in advance and freeze. This will keep them fresh and will keep the punch chilled.
- Keep the main punch bowl alcohol-free and offer guests to spike their own drinks with spiced whisky or rum if desired.
- Add the ginger beer at the last minute to ensure that the punch stays effervescent for longer. Top with extra ginger beer or sparkling water as needed.
