Halloween has always been about the joy classic homemade Halloween treats. Before plastic-wrapped chocolates and bagged chips took over, families and neighbours baked their own treats from scratch. These simple recipes, passed down through generations, were wrapped in wax paper or small treat bags and shared on Halloween night. But these classic homemade Halloween sweets were more than just desserts, they were traditions and created memories and moments of seasonal joy.
This year, I wanted to bring some of those vintage classics back to life in my own kitchen. I have chosen some favourites like Easy Popcorn Balls, Salted Caramel Apples, and Classic Peanut Brittle that are super old-school and nostalgic. Alongside these timeless recipes, I also added a modern twist with a 1990’s-inspired Marbled Halloween Bundt Cake that’s as festive as it is delicious.
You can find all of the full recipes and even more Halloween inspiration in the Sleepy Hollow Halloween issue of Season & Serve Magazine.

Easy Popcorn Balls
If you can make rice crispy squares, you can make these Easy Popcorn Balls! Made with just a few pantry staples, they come together quickly and can be dressed up with festive colours by suing sprinkles or candy decorations. They are perfect for sharing with friends or gifting to neighbours, and would be a fun project to make with little ones.

Classic Peanut Brittle
Peanut brittle is one of those timeless candies that instantly transports you back to childhood. My version stays true to the classic—crispy, buttery, and perfectly crackly—yet it is simple enough for any home cook to master. Once you learn the technique, you will find yourself making batch after batch all season long. It is also one of the best treats to package up in small bags for party favours or hostess gifts.

Salted Caramel Apples
Nothing says fall quite like a glossy caramel apple. This recipe uses a rich, homemade caramel that grips the apples beautifully and finishes with a sprinkle of sea salt for balance. They look stunning on a dessert table and make a fantastic activity for families to decorate together. Festive, sticky, and perfect for fall—these never go out of style!

Marbled Halloween Bundt Cake
For a modern twist, my 1990’s-inspired chocolate-and-vanilla Marbled Halloween Bundt Cake brings a dramatic reveal with every slice. The marbled centre feels fun and whimsical, and actually uses boxed vanilla cake mix (and a few hacks to transform it into this delicious recipe). It is effortless to prepare, bakes beautifully in a bundt pan, and feeds a crowd, which makes it ideal for any Halloween gathering.
