Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

Just like fall signals the start of pumpkin spice lattes (#PSL for life!), winter signals the start of hot chocolate. Rather than buying hot chocolate mix from the store, you can make it at home. And spoiler alert- it’s much cheaper! My basic hot chocolate mix contains only three ingredients and is perfect is on its own but if you want to mix up the flavours, a few simple ingredients can completely transform the recipe. Curl up with a warm cup of hot chocolate to celebrate the season!

Servings: 2 cups hot chocolate mix

Difficulty: Easy

Prep Time:  5 minutes   |   Cook Time: 0 minutes   |   Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup Dutch processed cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions:

In a large bowl, sift the sugar, cocoa powder and salt together. Mix with a spoon to fully combine. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.

For a single serving cup of hot chocolate, heat 1 cup of milk in a saucepan over medium heat until hot (do not let the milk boil). Add 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and whisk to combine.

For different flavours, add the following amounts of ingredients per serving:

Mocha Hot Chocolate: add 1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee powder

Mexican Hot Chocolate: add 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Peppermint Hot Chocolate: add 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

Hazelnut Hot Chocolate: add 1 tablespoon Nutella hazelnut spread
